Dive into the Middle Ages!

An exciting journey awaits you back to the time when Braunschweig was still called Bruneswic and was one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire. The group of children, including the maid Guda, the noblewoman Eleonore with her dog Cuno, the novice Odo, and the page Wilderich, will guide you through five themed worlds.

How did people live in Braunschweig's old town? What did the nobles do for a living? How were churches built back then? What were the duties of a knight? And what kinds of games did people play in the Middle Ages?

The children tell their stories from a first-person perspective, sharing their lives, their responsibilities and dreams, and the challenges that high medieval society presented to them.

Numerous interactive stations invite visitors to experience the era with their own senses. What does it feel like to work with wool or bone? What is it like to write with a reed pen? And how heavy is a great helm?

Archaeology and City History

The exhibits of the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum, taken from the large collection of archaeological excavations in the city, provide insight into housing, food, clothing, crafts, trade, and leisure activities in Braunschweig in the High Middle Ages.

Urban structures and architectural legacies from the years 1150–1250, the time of Henry the Lion, Emperor Otto IV. to Duke Otto the Child, shape the cityscape to this day. The exhibition delves into their stories of origin.

It offers age-appropriate points of reference to supplement teaching in primary and secondary schools. At the same time, the exhibition also offers newcomers and tourists low-threshold opportunities to get to know the significant medieval city history.

Guda, Eleonore, Odo, Wilderich and Cuno are waiting for you!
