Building works at the Hinter Aegidien venue

Closure of the venue form June 10, 2019 to autumn 2021

From Whitsun 2019 (June 10), the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum's venue at Hinter Aegidien will be closed for the general public.

In the preceding years, the Staatliches Baumanagement Braunschweig (SBBS) focused on the renovation of the fire-alarm system and the improvement of access. Now, the SBBS will focus on the continuous maintenance and repair of the façade and the necessary fire safety implementations to allow access to the top floor in the dormitory. The total sum involved in these works amounts to about 2.1 million euros and is expected to be completed by autumn 2021.

The first renovation phase (about 1.6 million euros) will include the overhaul – in line with conservation requirements – of the historical fence and wall system from the 16th century, and renovation of the historical façades and the roof of the dormitory. This process will also include the authentic restoration of stone surfaces and renovation of the stained glass windows.

A second, planned, investment of currently about 475,000 euros will be used to install fire safety measures and for the conversion of the dormitory to allow wheelchair access so that this space can be used for future exhibitions. Both measures are to be carried out in close cooperation with the office for the preservation of historical monuments of the State of Lower Saxony.

Visitors interested in this venue will have the opportunity to see the St Aegidien monastery and its collection of Judaica on the 9th of June (Whitsun). The director of the Museum, Dr Heike Pöppelmann, will offer a guided tour of the unusual architecture of the location, which consists of several former monastery buildings, at 2pm. Dr Lea Weik provides insights into her research focus “Jewish objects in northern Germany” within the framework of a guided tour of the Judaica collection (from 3pm).
