The Print Room

The collection of prints and drawings at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum is among the most important collection of graphics in Europe.

The print inventory comprises roughly 130,000 sheets. The collection of drawings consists of about 15,000 works. In addition, the Print Room houses more than 1,000 illustrated books – above all luxury editions from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

The focal point of the collection is European graphics from the late Middle Ages to the present. The Dutch and German schools are best represented, followed by works from Italy, France, England and – in the 20th century-section – North America. A smaller inventory of East Asian works comprises a collection of Japanese color woodcuts. The basis of this collection are works from the 15th to the 18th century. Unlike the collections of paintings, sculpture and applied art, the Print Room also focusses strongly on collecting art of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
