The book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” has been explaining the life of a butterfly from egg to adult to children for many years. Still most people are rather unaware of the early developmental stages of animals, which are often called larvae. However, many animals spend much or even most of their lives as larvae, as the prominent example of mayflies shows.
The special exhibition “LARVAE. The Childish Side of Biology” focuses on this important life stage. Greatly enlarged 3D models make the mostly small creatures visible. The exhibition features larvae hidden in wood as well as those living deep in the oceans and explains their astonishing behaviour along with their economic and ecological relevance.
The special exhibition is sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation within the framework of a Lichtenberg professorship at LMU Munich.
